A CSR INITIATIVE: MLS, CML, AND GIFT EDUCATION STUDIO COLLABORATE ON 'FURTHER EDUCATION PATHWAY' PROGRAMME

31 May - the Mandarin Language Society (MLS) of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), in collaboration with the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) and GIFT Education Studio, jointly organised a community service event entitled “Further Education Pathway and University Admission Guidance Programme”. The one-day event took place at UMPSA, Pekan campus and was spearheaded Kang Mei Feng, advisor of the MLS and a Mandarin teacher from CML, along with Neo Xiu Jie, a German teacher from the same centre. They welcomed three teachers and 16 secondary school students aged between 14 and 18 from SM Chong Hwa Kuantan, SMJK Hwa Lian, SMK Jerantut, SMK Temin, SMK Gudang Rasau, and SMK Tanah Puteh.

ICOLLT 4.0 2024 WORKSHOPS: UNLEASHING ENDLESS KNOWLEDGE AND DISCOVERY GALORE

21 May 2024 – The second day of the Fourth International Conference on Language Learning and Teaching (ICoLLT) 2024 was no less uplifting with the demonstration and presentations from industry experts, and academics.

The day began with the Smart Board Demonstration by Midwich Asia representatives, Mr. Ng Kian Eng and Mr. Chia Wai Hoe, one of the main sponsors of ICoLLT 4.0 2024. The introduction to Smart Board is timely and appropriate in equipping conference workshop participants with the latest technology in the market. The participants were in awe of the interactive features of the board that allow users to interact with digital content not only with a touch of a pen but also with one’s finger. Furthermore, the board is so sturdy that even if it falls, it will not break. As participants representing the Centre for Modern Languages, the device is hoped to be part of our soon-to-be established self-access resource centre. This centre is one of the CML’s efforts to become Malaysia’s east coast hub for language learning.

SYNERGISING THE ENGLISH FOR TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION, E-LEARNING AND UMPSA LIBRARY USER EDUCATION PROGRAMME: FACILITATING APA 7TH EDITION CITATION STYLES BEYOND CLASSROOMS

On 31st May 2024, UHL2422 English for Technical Communication Semester 2 (2023/2024) teaching team, in collaboration with the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) e-Learning Unit and UMPSA Library, conducted an online workshop on Citation Styles: American Psychological Association (APA) 7th Edition via Microsoft Teams. The workshop, led by the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Librarians, Ms. Affida Abu Bakar (Senior Librarian) and Ms. Rosfadilla Mohammad Zainun (Assistant Librarian), provided a comprehensive understanding of APA 7th Edition Citation Styles and practical hands-on experience using Mendeley. 70 participants, including UMPSA associates and students, benefited from the 2-hour online session. Additionally, 145 students from nine Gambang and Pekan sections had their face-to-face training on the same topic on 27th- 28th May 2024.

CSR PROGRAM: TRAINING OF FACILITATOR

PEKAN - On May 10 and 24, 2024, the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) planned and organized a training for facilitators. Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) Mandarin Language Society (MLS) collaborated with the Centre for Modern Languages and GIFT Education studio to organize a Community Service (CSR) charity event on career visits and university admission consultation. This training was carried out at Dewan Kuliah Utama (DKU), CML, UMPSA Pekan Campus, and certificates were provided to the facilitators.

HE ELCa 2024 COORDINATION MEETING

31 May 2024 – A pivotal coordination meeting for the Higher Education English Language Carnival 2024 (HE ELCa) convened via the Microsoft Teams platform for 2 hours from 10 am to 12 pm. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Dean of Academic at the Centre for Modern Languages, Dr. Fatimah Ali. The gathering brought together 15 team managers from 15 public universities across Malaysia. The theme for this year, 'Lingo, Tech, and Trads Unite,' was initially introduced, laying the groundwork for the innovative integration of traditional learning methods and contemporary educational tools.
