VOCABOOST 2.0: BUILDING TIOMAN LITTLE AMBASSADORS’ CONFIDENCE IN ENGLISH

Pulau Tioman, 22 August 2024 A dynamic community project was recently conducted by a group of ten dedicated associates from the Centre for Modern Languages (CML), led by Associate Professor Dr Zuraina Ali. This initiative is part of the prestigious Profesor Turun Padang (PTP) programme, which is run by the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) Centre for Industry & Community Linkages.

The event took place at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tekek, located on the picturesque island of Pulau Tioman. A total of 30 enthusiastic Year 6 students participated in the programme, which aimed to enhance their confidence in English language skills through interactive and enjoyable vocabulary building activities.

The programme commenced promptly at 9:00 a.m. with an ice-breaking session. Students were divided into small groups, each presenting their unique war cry, setting the tone for a day filled with energy and learning.

The programme was structured into three engaging stages:

Stage 1: Introduction
The session began with introducing the target vocabulary through two fun activities, "Word Detective" and "Take A Guess!" These two activities helped students to familiarize themselves with new words in an enjoyable and interactive manner.

Stage 2: Internalisation
In the next stage, the students took part in a matching activity where they were required to match pictures with the corresponding vocabulary. This activity was designed to reinforce their understanding of the words they had just learned.

Stage 3: Production
The final stage of the programme encouraged creativity, as the students were required to produce a song using the vocabulary they had learned earlier. This activity not only consolidated their learning but also allowed them to express themselves musically. Familiar nursery rhymes were used to guide the students in creating the musical tone produced.

The programme concluded at 12:30 p.m. with a prize-giving ceremony, where participants were rewarded for their active involvement and creative contributions throughout the day.

This successful event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a dedicated team, including Dr. Ruhil Amal Azmuddin, Azimah Ahmad Zaki, Farah Liyana Ahmad Azmey, Hanisah Bon (Kasbon), Noraisah Nurul Fatwa Mohd Razali, Nurul Nadia Muhammad, Shamsul Harbi, Muhamad Aizat Zulkifli, and Nurul Syazwani Aziz. Their collective enthusiasm and commitment played a crucial role in making this project both impactful and enjoyable.

The success of this project underscores the effectiveness of the Profesor Turun Padang (PTP) programme in bridging academic learning with real-world community engagement. This programme has set a commendable example of how educational initiatives can be both impactful and enjoyable, leaving a lasting positive impression on the young participants.
