NO MORE TRAVELLING WEST: UMPSA PURSUES FIRST IELTS TEST CENTRE IN PAHANG

PEKAN, 19 May 2026 – The Centre for Modern Languages (CML), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), is actively paving the way to become the East Coast hub for the computer-based International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This aspiration was discussed during a strategic meeting between Mr. Thinesh Amaresin, representative from IDP Education Malaysia, and the following CML representatives: Dr. Ezihaslinda Ngah (Head of Department); Dr. Wan Jumani Fauzi (Coordinator of the Score for IELTS Course); Siti Ainun Jariyah Hassan (Head of the Competency Unit); and Alia Najaa Md Nor (IELTS Coordinator).

The online discussion was successfully conducted via Google Meet, where both parties reviewed the requirements and preparations necessary to establish an IDP-approved third-party IELTS testing venue at the UMPSA Pekan Campus.

The discussion aimed to identify the requirements that CML must fulfil to be recognised as a computer-based IELTS Test Centre. Currently, most computer-based IELTS test-takers in the East Coast region are required to travel to Kuala Lumpur or other locations on the West Coast to sit for the examination. Based on the operational plans discussed, the proposed test centre will leverage CML's existing facilities, including a dedicated high-specification computer laboratory capable of accommodating up to 20 candidates per session. The facility will also incorporate stringent security measures, including multi-angle CCTV surveillance and a dedicated virtual speaking room that enables remote examiner connectivity via Zoom.

Beyond serving as a testing venue, the collaboration is expected to contribute to academic excellence through specialized Train-the-Trainer (TOT) certification programmes conducted by global IDP trainers. In addition, the partnership aims to provide localized and cost-effective IELTS preparation workshops for UMPSA staff and students, equipping them with essential tips and strategies to achieve their target band scores and unlock greater global opportunities.

Once finalized, the centre will offer internal test sessions exclusively for UMPSA staff and students, alongside open sessions for public candidates from across Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan.

The discussion concluded on a positive note, with Mr. Thinesh providing comprehensive guidance and feedback on CML's preparedness to move forward with the proposed IELTS Test Centre initiative. CML looks forward to realizing this collaboration and ensuring its success as part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing the English language competency of both staff and students.
