FOSTERING A LOVE FOR READING: UMPSA’S INSPIRING READING CIRCLE AT SK JUARA, PULAU TIOMAN

On August 22, 2024, the Centre for Modern Languages at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), in collaboration with Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Juara, Pulau Tioman, organized the "Reading Circle," a community service program aimed at fostering a love of reading among students. English books were also donated, giving the students access to a wider variety of reading materials.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from 35 of the school’s 39 students, highlighting the strong interest from the community. The program began with an ice-breaking session, followed by an engaging Reading Circle featuring interactive games and activities designed to stimulate and reinforce reading skills. The event concluded with a symbolic handover of reading materials to the Student Affairs Senior Assistant of SK Juara, Pn. Mariana binti Jantan.

Farah Liyana Ahmad Azmey, the Program Director, remarked, “This program not only aims to improve the students’ reading abilities but also to foster a long-lasting reading culture.” She emphasized that the initiative is part of UMPSA’s broader commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on providing quality education, particularly to students from underprivileged backgrounds.

A noteworthy aspect of the program was the generous contribution of books donated by UMPSA staff. These donations complemented the program’s efforts by providing valuable reading materials that will continue to support the students' learning even after the event.

A representative from SK Juara expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the presence of UMPSA staff brought hope and inspiration to the students, particularly through their engagement in the English reading activities. Teachers reported that the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were motivated by the fun, interactive approach.

Overall, the Reading Circle program was a resounding success, achieving its goals and receiving positive feedback from students and teachers. It is hoped that similar programs will continue in the future, further cultivating a love for reading and enhancing learning opportunities for students.
