CSR FISHTALES 2024
PEKAN, November 2024 - The Centre for Modern Languages (CML) proudly completed its community service project, Fishtales 2024, in collaboration with the Port Dickson Ornamental Fish Center. The project involved the meticulous translation of 100 ornamental fish descriptions from Malay to English, a significant step towards increasing global accessibility to local aquatic biodiversity knowledge.
The translation work was undertaken by CML’s dedicated academic staff, whose expertise ensured accurate translations. The initiative not only aimed to promote Malaysia’s rich aquatic resources but also emphasized the importance of language as a bridge for cultural and scientific exchange.
The Head of the Port Dickson Ornamental Fish Center, Doreen Wee Siew Leen, complimented the translations done by the CML team and extended a warm invitation for a short visit to the center. The visit is hoped to provide CML faculty members with an immersive experience, including insights into the fish centre’s operations and Malaysia's vibrant ornamental fish industry.
This collaboration exemplifies the power of community projects in fostering meaningful connections between academia and local industries. It also highlights how language and translation can contribute to preserving and sharing Malaysia's unique biodiversity.
The Fishtales 2024 project reinforces CML’s commitment to utilizing linguistic expertise for community development and hopes to continue fostering similar initiatives that make a tangible impact.
