26 April 2024 - It remains a dream for many students to secure funding for their studies without enduring the strain of part-time jobs or burdening their parents. Among the standard prerequisites for scholarship eligibility is proficiency in English language. This criterion ensures that applicants can effectively participate in English-medium coursework, lectures, and other academic activities at the university. Moreover, strong English skills indicate an applicant's capability to adapt to diverse cultural and academic contexts, a quality highly sought after in candidates poised for success in varied settings.

In evaluating candidates for the Yayasan UMPSA scholarship, English language proficiency is measured through the English Written Test, comprising of Reading and Writing components. This test assesses candidates' abilities to thrive in an English-medium academic environment and engage meaningfully with the global academic community, specifically within UMPSA setting. The test was conducted online via Microsoft Teams and hosted by the Student Affairs and Alumni Department (SAffAD) UMPSA on Friday morning, April 26, 2024. The session commenced with opening remarks by Chairperson Mrs. Norhafizah binti Musa, followed by the Reading test at 9:30 a.m., administered by Mrs. Rosnani binti Ismail. Candidates were briefed on the instructions, and the duration of the test was one hour. The Reading test evaluates candidates' ability to comprehend complex texts, especially academic articles, a critical skill for students engaging with a wide array of materials in their academic pursuits.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., candidates were granted a 10-minute break before proceeding to the Writing test. This 40-minute session, led by Ms. Fathiah Izzati binti Mohamad Fadzillah, required the candidates to craft an opinion essay on an assigned topic. Candidates were tasked with producing a coherent, well-structured essay and response to the prompt. This test evaluates candidates' ability to articulate ideas clearly, organize thoughts logically, and support opinions or arguments with examples and personal experiences.

Overall, the objective of these English tests, focusing on reading and writing, is to evaluate candidates' language proficiency, critical thinking abilities, and readiness to meet academic demands. These assessments ensure that selected recipients possess the necessary skills and qualities to excel in their studies and contribute meaningfully to their academic fields. The tests were conducted smoothly and concluded without a hitch. Best of luck to all candidates!
