UNDERSTAND YOUR DATA: INTRODUCTION TO SPSS

Pekan, 3rd May 2021 – COVID-19 has obviously caused major impacts on education where online learning is currently the new norm during this global pandemic. Since the first Movement Control Order (MCO) was imposed on 18th March 2020 to curb the virus from spreading, the traditional form of face-to-face education has been reformed to online learning.

Educational institutions including higher learning institutions had to implement, adapt and embrace the changes where teaching and learning needs to be conducted online, instructors need to review their course contents, materials and teaching concepts, as well as seminars and training sessions are transmitted over the internet as webinars; all for the sake of learning to recommence.

Thus, in the hope of achieving meaningful learning experiences among postgraduate students and staff amidst this challenging time, Centre for Modern Languages (CML) has played an active role in disseminating digital knowledge and skills by organising CML Guest Speaker Series, with one of them was on ‘Introduction to SPSS’ which was conducted by Associate Professor Ts. Dr Mohd Rashid bin Ab Hamid from Centre for Mathematical Sciences, College of Computing and Applied Sciences. The programme received overwhelming participation from MSc.TILS postgraduate students who are taking MLT6314 Research Methodology as well as CML lecturers, instructors and researchers. With the availability of data in information systems and technology, researchers need a clear understanding on data analysis to measure performance and hypothesis testing related to the data obtained. These analytical skills encourage practitioners to dig deeper and ask more questions, increasing their chances of making breakthrough discoveries in data.

All in all, the programme was able to achieve its main objective which was to provide initial exposure to the MSc.TILS students on SPSS and external experts in the field of quantitative approach. It is also hoped that the programme may also provide opportunities for future educational partnerships and research collaborations between CML and other centres and departments in UMP.
