MUET E-SEMINAR UMP DHU: A SUCCESS
4 June 2022 – A MUET E-Seminar was successfully conducted through a joint venture program between the Competency Unit from the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) and the Community Brigade, Centre of Excellence of DRB Hicom University. This Community Service Relation (CSR) programme was conducted via Microsoft Teams on Friday, 3 June 2022.
The sessions were presented by four experienced senior language teachers from the Department of English Language in CML, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), namely Ms. Nor Suhardiliana Sahar, Ms. Siti Ainun Jariyah Hassan, Ms. Noraisah Nurul Fatwa Mohd Razali and Ms. Noor Azlinda Zainal Abidin.
The session began at 8.30 a.m., preceded with the Writing slot, and later followed by Listening and Reading slot respectively. Meanwhile, the Speaking slot conducted for the afternoon session at 2.30 p.m. marked the end of the seminar.
The purpose of this seminar is to familiarise the participants with the latest MUET format and strategies in answering the four language skills where it mainly attracted participants from DRB Hicom University and also Universiti Malaysia Pahang students.
Notably, four UMP students were chosen and trained by the invited speakers as the moderators to facilitate the seminar. With the training, the moderators were naturally more adept at speaking in public and handling crowds via online seminars.
Apart from the participants, the feedback from the moderators was very encouraging as all four moderators felt they benefited from the training and the remarkable experience as student moderators.
Earlier, Nur Suhaina, one of the moderators and a student from the College of Engineering UMP, remarked that she was pleased with her progress in overcoming fear in speaking in public. In the beginning of the session, she was nervous but with guidance by Ms. Siti Ainun, she gradually overcome the anxiety and managed to moderate the session smoothly.
In addition, Shara Anandan, the moderator for the afternoon session was really delighted to discover the opportunity for her to practise her speaking skills. She added that having practices with Ms. Noor Azlinda on pronunciation and pace have helped her to become more confident in moderating. It was her first experience as a moderator for an online event and she has learned on how to make the event fun and happening through her experience as a moderator.
According to Ms. Laily Zainal, an English lecturer in DRB Hicom University and the person in charge of the E-Seminar, this collaboration has helped DHU in terms of guiding the students to get themselves prepared for the MUET examination which was around the corner. With the joint collaboration between the Competency Unit (CML, UMP) and the Community Brigade (Centre of Excellence of DRB Hicom University), she said, both institutions can benefit from it.
It is hoped that more collaborations and initiatives could be made as both institutions have similar niche areas in engineering and technology.
