FROM MISTAKES TO MASTERY: STUDENTS LEARN THE ART OF OPINION WRITING

PEKAN, 8 May 2025 – The ULE1310 Fundamentals of English Language and ULE1352 Essential English courses recently hosted a successful Global Classroom session via Google Meet. Specifically designed for Semester 2, Session 2024/2025 students, the interactive two-hour session welcomed 43 participants and ran from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. 

The highlight of the evening was a talk by Dr. Ikmi Nur Oktavianti, M.A., a linguistics lecturer from the English Education Department at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Ikmi delivered an engaging and informative presentation titled “Common Mistakes in Opinion Essays, and How to Avoid Them”. Through real examples and expert advice, she guided students on identifying frequent errors and improving their writing strategies. 

The session was dynamic and highly interactive. Dr. Ikmi skilfully engaged attendees using digital tools such as Mentimeter, Google Docs, and Google Forms, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. 

Nurul Nadia Muhammad, the coordinator for ULE1310, emphasized the relevance of the session, “This Global Classroom initiative is crucial in helping students recognize and avoid common pitfalls in opinion essays. By being more aware, they can improve the quality of their writing.” 

Siti Ainun Jariyah Hassan, instructor of ULE1352, added “This initiative offers more than just new knowledge; it provides a meaningful learning experience with direct input from an international expert.” 

Students feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One of the participants, Muhammad Syamil Irfan shared, “I learned a lot from the session. I was able to recognize the mistakes I’ve made and now I know how to avoid them in future essays.” 

Overall, the session was a valuable opportunity for students to refine their writing skills and gain insights from an international perspective. The teaching team looks forward to hosting more Global Classroom sessions on diverse and engaging topics to further enrich students’ learning journeys.
