ENIGMA ENGLISH: A SAFARI ADVENTURE FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
This was the spirit of the Enigma English programme, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by the CSR Unit, Centre for Modern Languages, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah. The programme was held at SK Kampung Acheh, Pekan, Pahang on November 17, 2023.
The programme aimed to foster the students' interest and awareness of wildlife and biodiversity, while also developing their English language proficiency and vocabulary.
Approximately sixty-one students from Year 1 to Year 6 participated in the programme, where they had an enjoyable and instructive experience simulating rangers on a safari expedition, recognizing wildlife, and learning about the facts and challenges facing them.
Some of the activities included Guess the Emoji, Exploring Wh-Questions and Tiger Superhero, where the students demonstrated their creativity by creating their tiger superhero characters.
The students seized the opportunities to present the superheroes they had created, and recognition came in the form of Best Presenter Awards given to two outstanding students.
The programme achieved its objectives of engaging the students in enjoyable and educational activities and enhancing their awareness and understanding of wildlife conservation issues. The teachers and staff of SK Kampung Acheh also thanked the CSR Unit for initiating and facilitating the programme.
The coordinator of the CSR Unit, Ms. Nur Syafawati Sabuan, stated that the programme was part of their continuous endeavour to disseminate knowledge and skills to schools, organisations, and communities in accordance with their vision of fostering lifelong learning. She also highlighted that the programme was aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 15, which urges immediate action to safeguard and restore life on land.
The Enigma English programme was one of the many outreach efforts by the CSR Unit of CML-UMPSA, which has been sharing its expertise and resources with local schools, organisations and communities since its establishment in 2017.
The CSR Unit aims to promote lifelong learning and social responsibility among its stakeholders and society at large. By actively participating in initiatives that transcend traditional educational boundaries, the CSR Unit exemplifies its mission to empower individuals and contribute to the broader societal well-being.
It is hoped that these initiatives will leave a lasting impact on the educational landscape and the communities they serve.
