CML POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS SHINE AT 3MT COMPETITION IN UPM
SERDANG, 19 June 2025 - This year, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has been entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition event at its Serdang campus, in collaboration with its co-host, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). Two postgraduate students from the Centre for Modern Languages (CML), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), proudly represented the university at the competition under the Social Science category.
The national-level competition, held annually to celebrate the work of postgraduate students, challenges participants to share their entire thesis in just three minutes. With only one simple, static slide and words that everyone can understand, the competition pushes students to share their research in a way that connects with people, not just experts.
Representing UMPSA were Aisyah Khaleeda Rosli and Norhazwanie Jatin, both of whom are currently pursuing their doctorate degrees at the Centre for Modern Languages. Their participation marked a significant achievement for CML, reflecting the centre’s growing presence and impact in interdisciplinary research, particularly within the field of language, communication, and education.
Aisyah Khaleeda’s presentation focused on the use of the story-listening technique as a method for helping young learners acquire and retain vocabulary, while Norhazwanie Jatin delved into the utilisation of an AI tool that supports tertiary education teachers in enhancing students’ writing skills and creativity. Both topics resonated with current societal and educational issues, earning positive feedback from the panel of judges and the audience.
The Deputy Dean of Research and Development, Associate Professor Dr Hafizoah Kassim expressed her pride in the students’ accomplishments. “It’s encouraging to see our postgraduate students not only conducting meaningful research but also having the confidence to share their work with the wider academic community. We hope this inspires more students to engage in research communication and interdisciplinary work,” she said.
The competition, which gathered participants from public universities across Malaysia, continues to promote academic excellence and science communication skills among emerging scholars. Special thanks were also extended to their mentors, Dr Ashwin Charles Benedict and Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Ashraf Fauzi, whose guidance and support were instrumental in preparing the students for the competition.
UMPSA’s presence at this year’s 3MT reaffirms the university’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded researchers who can bridge academia and society through clear, impactful communication.
