CML WEBINAR EXPLORES AI AND AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT FOR THE UPCOMING HYBRID SEMESTER
PEKAN, 7 August 2026 – The Centre for Modern Languages (CML), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), through its Applied Linguistics Research Cluster, organised a webinar entitled “Language Assessment in the Era of AI” as part of its efforts to strengthen academic staff readiness for evolving teaching and assessment practices, particularly in preparation for the upcoming hybrid semester, Semester I of the 2026/2027 Academic Session.
The webinar featured Professor Dr. Fauziah Abdul Rahim from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), who shared her expertise and practical insights on the changing landscape of language assessment in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The session highlighted the growing need for educators to rethink conventional assessment practices as higher education moves towards increasingly flexible and technology-enhanced learning environments. Particular attention was given to the responsible ethical integration of AI into language assessment while ensuring that assessments remain meaningful, authentic, and aligned with intended learning outcomes.
Among the key areas discussed were the role of AI in supporting assessment practices, the importance of formative and alternative assessments, and the use of authentic assessment tasks that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and competencies in meaningful contexts. The session also addressed one of the major concerns surrounding AI in education, especially in maintaining academic integrity while embracing technological advancement.
The webinar was particularly timely as UMPSA prepares for Semester I of the 2026/2027 Academic Session, which will incorporate a hybrid approach to teaching and learning. In such an environment, assessment practices need to extend beyond simply transferring conventional assessments to online platforms. Instead, educators are encouraged to explore assessment approaches that effectively combine technology, authentic learning experiences, and meaningful feedback. Through practical examples and discussions, participants were exposed to alternative assessment approaches such as portfolios, presentations, simulations, project-based tasks, peer and self-assessment, as well as other technology-supported activities. These approaches provide opportunities for students to demonstrate learning while developing communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and other competencies relevant to their future professional environments.
The webinar also provided a platform for academic staff to reflect on how AI can be used not merely as a technological tool, but as part of a thoughtful assessment ecosystem that supports learning while preserving the integrity and validity of assessment. The programme reflects CML’s continuing commitment to enhancing teaching and learning practices and supporting academic staff in responding effectively to emerging developments in language education and higher education.
