CML ENGAGEMENT IN ENGLISH COMPETENCY FOR TVET EDUCATORS

From May 6-10, 2024 – A team of 10 English language instructors of the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) engaged with 26 Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Kuantan (KKTM) in the English Competency Training. The training, which was carried out at KKTM Kuantan Perpustakaan Al Jazari and Smart Classroom, aims to improve understanding and mastery of the English language to improve the KKTM technical instructors’ teaching and learning quality in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) arena.

The CML trainers and facilitators were led by Hajah Noor Azlinda Zainal Abidin; Associate Professor Dr Noor Raha Mohd Radzuan, Dr Azwin Arif Abdul Rahim, Dr Ezihaslinda Ngah, Dr Nor Yazi Hj Khamis, Hamizah Zahari, Hanisah Bon@Kasbon, Nor Suhardiliana Mohd Sahar, Mohd Shafeirul Zaman Abdul Majid and Noraisah Nurul Fatwa Mohd Razali.

For five days, the English Competency Training for KKTM Kuantan Technical Lecturers initiated by the English Language Unit, KKTM Kuantan, in collaboration with CML, covered English language skills and communication topics like forms and functions of English expressions and phrases, technical English terminology and jargon, teaching strategies, and discussion skills. The technical instructors were also exposed to grammar items like subject-verb agreement and tenses as well as speech and signpost languages to enhance listening skills and sentence rephrasing techniques for essays and technical report writing. Participants were also tasked with creating TikTok videos to document their learning experiences.

To promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (Goal 4) and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal 9), the participants were briefed on online instructional designs and approaches of Education 5.0 that centres on human learning on developing the future skills such as digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

As always, the CML consultancy’s quality control underscored the training to be equipped with pre-tests and post-tests to ensure its effectiveness and impact on the participants. Finally, CML extends its gratitude to Puan Rozie Zakaria from KKTM Kuantan English Language Unit for her utmost cooperation and trust in facilitating the smoothness of the event. The centre hopes and encourages future collaborations for improvement and supporting continuous learning and professional development.
