ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH
PEKAN, 20 - 21 February 2025 - Research and Innovation Department at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) organised a workshop on research writing and publication from 20 to 21 February 2025. This event was conducted at Incubator Area, Level 5, Faculty of Computing, UMPSA Pekan Campus, involving 69 lecturers from all faculties. Eleven of them were from the Centre for Modern Languages (CML).
The objectives of this workshop were to provide exposure and guidance on journal writing in top-tier journals, particularly for academic staff, and to enhance their ability to produce systematic scholarly publications. Moreover, this initiative is hoped to enhance faculty and university's research output, contributing to their academic reputation and visibility at national and international levels.
The speaker of this workshop was Prof. Dr. Mohd Awang Idris, who is a professor from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Universiti Malaya. In this workshop, he enlightened us about the cutting-edge methodology to conduct research, provided strategies for publishing top journals, identified good and predatory journals and assisted in writing a good structure of journal papers. His wide experience in publishing top-tier journals helped the participants to refine their writing style, making their research more impactful and comprehensible to a broader audience. The opportunity to receive expert guidance and engage in interactive sessions was highly beneficial in improving participants' academic writing skills.
Zarina Mohd Ali, one of CML associates, stated that it is important for researchers to be able to write a good research introduction and develop their own research model. Equally important aspects of writing discussed during the workshop were understanding the voice, how theory and method intersect, and how to present and discuss results. Additionally, lecturers were reminded that when proposing a research design and conducting an evaluation, the limitations of the research should not be overlooked. She applauds the effort by the Research and Innovation Department for initiating and organising the workshop customised for UMPSA lecturers in the social sciences.
In conclusion, this workshop served as a platform for CML associates to enhance their research publications and academic credentials. It was an invaluable opportunity for participants to gain insights into best practices for academic publishing and strengthen their research contributions in this workshop. This initiative will provide CML associates with the necessary skills, strategies, and networking opportunities in achieving excellence in research and publication.
